During viral infection, pre-existing memory CD8 + T cells that are not specific for the infecting
virus can be activated by cytokines without cognate antigens, termed bystander activation.
Recent studies have demonstrated that bystander-activated CD8 + T cells exert either
protective or detrimental effects on the host depending on the infection model or disease.
In this lecture, I will present our recent data showing the mechanisms and
immunopathological roles of IL-15-induced bystander CD8 + T cell activation in acute viral
hepatitis. In addition, I will discuss molecular regulations of bystander activation-related
genes and clinical significance of bystander activation.
